I remember many road trips when I needed to find one of these telephone booths in order to make a phone call.  They were in a way  a "safety line" enabling one to travel but still stay in touch.  Now they are almost  a roadside oddity, especially one that still works.  The cell phone has made it so one is almost never out of touch with anyone or any news of the world, no matter where one finds themself.  But the cost of that permanent connection is a loss of the sensation of freedom and adventure, a sense of being, at least for a little while, untethered from the rest of your life.
